How to give yourself a blow out

A woman smiling.

We all know that look of a fresh blow-out. Bouncy, glossy and full of volume, it’s a lovely treat to put some new life into your hair for a special occasion such as a wedding or a big event. But a lot of people don’t know it’s possible to get the look at home. So here’s our guide for getting that just-stepped-out-of-the-salon hair, from the comfort of your own bedroom.

What is a Blowout?

A blow out is the art of drying hair into a desired style after hair washing. This is achieved by blow drying and styling with a round brush and high powered blow dryers.

A typical blow out adds volume and lift to the hair, and is designed to last for a number of days before you need to wash your hair again. Essentially, the process takes hair from natural texture and makes the cuticle smooth with the use of heat. It also helps to lift the hair up from the usual position that it might fall into.

Curly hair can also be given a straight blow out, meaning our curly-haired beauties can enjoy straight hair without having to commit to more permanent methods such as chemical straightening.

How To Create The Blow Out At Home

You will need:

-       Heat protectant

-       Hair dryer

-       Hair tie or sectioning clips

-       Comb

-       Hairbrush (the wider the better)

-       Holding product

First wash your hair with shampoo and conditioner. After washing, comb to detangle. Next, section your hair by splitting it into two main sections and securing the top half with a clip.

Split the bottom half into two parts and let hang. We recommend you use a great heat protectant in order to help protect your hair and prevent frayed and broken ends. Starting at the bottom, give a rough dry until your locks are about 80 percent dry.

After this, grab a wide brush (ideally a barrel brush or boar bristle brush, but the larger the brush the more volume you can get) and use it to lift pieces of your hair up while you focus your hair dryer near the roots and work down to the ends.

The best technique is to place the brush under the hair and lift it up while drying in order to create volume. You also want to use a concentrator nozzle if you have one – this means the airflow is focused and helps the cuticle of the hair to lie flat and prevents frizziness.

Continue this process on the other side and then on the top section of the hair.

For a super straight finish – complete by drying your hair straight down towards the floor.

For curly ends – twist the brush at the ends of your hair to create a curl.

To finish the look – add a lifting spray for extra volume.

How to Extend the Life of Your Blow Out

A blow out has the potential to last until you wash your hair again. We suggest you keep your hair dry, sleep on a silk pillowcase with a loose ponytail or bun so your hair stays on the top of your head, wear a shower cap while showering and blow dry your roots and add a dry shampoo to freshen.
